As I write, there are just 172 days until Christmas. And, yes, I might just be sitting here groaning alongside you… because who wants to think about Christmas when it’s a bazillion degrees outside in the summer?
But the truth is – if you’re a maker and like to give handmade gifts, this deadline is important! And no matter how much I try to plan ahead, I still end up casting on projects last minute in November and even December because suddenly I need to knit for someone I didn’t initially plan on!
So, with that in mind, I’m going to spend the next few weeks writing about some holiday knitting projects and ideas to help inspire you to think ahead and limit that last minute project panic that inevitably creeps in later in the year!
Need yarn for one of these projects, or perhaps another? Let us know! Stitch & Skein can custom order yarn for you from Berroco, Lopi, Amano, and Lang yarns and have it shipped right to your door! Plus, orders over $75 get free shipping!
Week 1 – Projects for the home
Stockings
Personalize your holiday mantle (or walls) with specially made holiday stockings! A few years ago I knit up some holiday stockings of our own, and they’re one of my favorite things to pull out each and every year! Make a set out of the same color so they match, or choose coordinating ones so each family member’s stocking is unique!

Tree Skirts
Wrap your tree up in a bit of cozy wool this holiday season! I haven’t yet made a tree skirt of my own, mostly because my cats love to lay on them and tear them up, but the shop might just get one for the tree going in the window this year.

Advent Calendars
I never had an advent calendar as a child – it just wasn’t something we did, really, growing up. But there’s something magical and fun about counting down the days to Christmas, especially when you have littles in the house.
